FIVE CSX Standard Cab EMD Locomotives Leading Q541 | W&A Subdivision Atlanta, GA 2019
Переглядів 7728 днів тому
Q541 (Cincinnati, OH - Waycross, GA) had a trio of SD40s coming down the Etowah Subdivision. They picked up the 4th and 5th motors in Cartersville. Pretty crazy to see a locomotive lash-up like this nowadays, especially on a Class 1 RR. These motors have a rich heritage hiding underneath their CSX YN3 paint - L&N, C&O, D&H, and RF&P. See if you can count how many different times the plane makes an appearance in the video! Chaffee, MO is a small railroad town located roughly 125 miles south of St. Louis. By surprise, my friend Kevin and I caught 4002 leading train 152, and we chased the train about 20 miles north for a second shot. We didn't know it was leading, and you can see Kev calling some of our friends who were railfanning in Cordele to let them know it was heading their way. 4002 is painted in a unique paint scheme because it was the 3rd dash-9 locomotive that Norfolk Southern successfu...

W013 is a continuously-welded rail train hauling 24 segments of rail that are each about 1 mile long. At the end of the train is a caboose, painted bright orange for better visibility (at least when it was new). This caboose was built for the B&O Railroad and now serves as a standing platform for train crews when the train runs in reverse. CSXTs 4031, 4025, and 8368 are all SD40 variants with m...

We started our day chasing FEC train 905 between St. Augustine, Bunnell, and Ormond Beach, covering about 100 miles in total. 905 was hauling a little bit of everything... rock loads, manifest, intermodal...

With good timing, I caught KCS's Veteran's unit trailing 3rd of 3 on the eastbound pig train while on my way to a drumming gig. Seen here at the Nickajack Road crossing on Norfolk Southern's Atlanta North District. This crossing has since been upgraded to have four gates and trains no longer sound their horns here. This is likely due to the many neighborhoods near the crossing. Silencing the tr...

M648 books it through Cartersville, GA with a pair of double-digit AC44s. I thought it might be cool to post an unedited video to show how I rotate through different camera angles. In the event that I had time to edit, I would cut between shots in post-production to make everything look more smooth. There was a rough spot on the rail that gave this train a little more rhythm than you usually he...

We chased Norfolk Southern train 213 from Thomasville, NC all the way to Westminster, SC! These massive 80MAC locomotives had 20-cylinder EMD 710G prime movers, which generate a whopping 5,000 Horsepower and operate at a max speed of 900 RPMs. Only 30 EMD SD80MACs were ever produced, and none remain in service as of November 2022. 2235. That’s an old Paducah and Louisville railroad engine correct? That paint scheme
Yessir, that is correct!
@@ICE6365 thought so. Live right beside the mainline in St. John Right out side Elizabethtown Ky
@@Farmerjon9660 Awesome, so I take it you see the PAL often?
@@ICE6365 yes quite often. There was a comment in here somewhere that says they run mostly at night. This is true. But prolly 2-3 trains during the day

My special needs son really likes cabooses like that one he thinks that the railroads should have kept the caboose in service on the end of freight trains by just installing the flashing rear end device onto the caboose instead of replacing it.
I like cabooses as well, and I wish they were more common. The flashing light isn't as iconic! Nowadays, cabooses are most commonly seen on trains that need to move backwards for long distances so the conductor has a place to stand (this is why cabooses can be referred to as "shoving platforms").

Nice compilation of videos. Love the shot coming under the bridge. Since the GP60 is one of my favorite loco's the local was cool. Equipment on the military train was from 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, ‘The Iron Brigade’, 1st Armored Division from Fort Bliss, TX returning from 9 month rotation to CENTCOM Area of Operations in support of Operation Spartan Shield.
Thanks very much! I really appreciate the information about the military consist. Been wondering about that ever since filming this train. Have you served in the military?
@@ICE6365 Your welcome, sadly no I was going the route of USCG (Always wanted to be a rescue helicopter pilot) my senior year in high school I was diagnosed with a medical issue which disqualified me from serving. Not only did it blow my USCG plans but plans to become a State Trooper afterwards.
@@dcmkris Man, I'm really sorry to hear. They don't play around with medical stuff do they. I had a friend who was in her last week of basic training, and they sent her home after a medical emergency. Like you, she had a passion for it so it was sad they sent her home.
I know the states is a massive place but do they not have a rail inspection trains that can run these lines at least once a year to check them for irregularities. The light reflection off them shows some janky railway lines. In the UK we have one that runs all lines at speed if need be. checking the lines for problems. You know in the neighbourhood as it has a massive blue light shining off the top of it. It would save a lot of time and effort from what i have seen in this video.
Excellent question! There are many inspection trains that run on the main lines of the larger railroads in the USA. However, it does not make financial sense for a class 3 railroad to run an inspection train. Instead, they have track crews manually inspect the rails. The tracks are in good enough shape for 15 mile per hour rail movements when the train shuttles railcars to/from this industry. The cause of the wheel slips in this case is the lack of power from the engines.
@@ICE6365 Oh i did not know there where different classes of railroad in the US. makes sense.
I am absolutely getting an ES44AC (FEC) for my future HO scale train layout.
Those are great units too! Love the FEC
Awesome video John! Man I gotta get back out to the Midwest again. Love that Santa Fe defect detector at the end! Also I counted the crop duster plane 7 times.
Thank you Joel! I love the midwest, but man was it hot... 97 degrees and high humidity. It felt like a sauna, and not in a good way lol. Glad you liked the SF DD, and I appreciate you counting the number of times the plane passed! That made editing this video extra fun for me.
97 degrees and humid? Oh man that must’ve been miserable.

Great to hear such marvelous words of wisdom from you Bepis Man!
Was this a part of the rail line from Kingston to Rome Ga the Rome Railroad still in use?
I'm not 100% sure, but after doing some research, I think it's unlikely. According to this source, the Rome Railroad ended just east of where I filmed in this video: www.abandonedrails.com/rome-railroad
Excellent video! What an odd sounding crossing gate
Thank you Alex! That E-bell at the crossing is really annoying lol, but I guess it is serving its purpose.
Seht euch diesen Schrott an es ist ein Wunder das die Wagons nicht aus den Schienen fallen.
Definitiv kein deutscher Einfallsreichtum, haha
The rails need grease for proper maintenance.
Yep, that would reduce a lot of the flange noise you hear around the curve
Awesome shots John! You guys had perfect lighting! I love surprise catches like that.
Thanks Joel! Same here - when you don't know the special unit is coming, it makes it even more special lol
Awesome catch! I catch trains frequently on this line.

It was shocking for sure lol
Why do you claim the tunnel was never used ? It was bypassed a long time back , but never used , I wonder ...
A friend of mine who knows a lot about railroad history told me this. Seems like a waste to build it and then decide to go around it... Maybe new advances in technology at the time played a part in the decision.
@@ICE6365 I would enjoy talking with your friend about this area. I discovered it in about 1982 after I moved here from Wisconsin. At that time the tunnel opening was almost entirely covered in a waterfall of vines . The hillside a jungle of trees and brush. Soon after , I made a vow to open it up for photographers like us. Using only a hand bow saw and a machete , I slowly cleaned it much as you see it today. Over the years , it has grown back up and trees have fallen to mess it up. I have now graduated to a chain saw for clean up and if you go back now, you will see I have been busy here. A friend of mine Jesse Falan and I have over the past few months cut many trees along the hill side. They are stacked on the road side of the bank. I just recently cut up and cleared a huge fallen tree at the tunnel opening . As to the existence and history of this spot, which I call MP 139 or Summit ; I know it was built in 1850 or so , single track into Chattanooga. It was also used to shore up the hillside when built by Irish stonemasons. When the double track expansion came 1911 ? 1920 ? , the old bore was of course by passed and left in place to continue its job of holding the hillside in place. I am sure the old single track and tunnel were used by equipment of that era as it was much smaller then. Just look at the bore at Tunnel Hill, GA ; the old and new are side by side and one can clearly see the size comparison of old and new. BTW, the Tunnel Hill area is another of my recent clean up efforts . We are very lucky to still have the shot at MP 139 after all the years and hope to be able to shoot there for many years to come. I could tell you MANY stories of railfanning around this area, hope to meet you trackside sometime soon.
@@johnuhelski8613 Thank you for the info, and for all of your clean-up efforts to keep the shot looking good! It is much appreciated by the many railfans who film there. Hope to see you along the line too. I'm due for a trip to Chattanooga soon.

Good to watch these when they used to use there horn
Thanks! Glad I'm not the only one who enjoys watching older videos to see the way things used to be. A lot has changed in Acworth
Good to watch these with there horn
Thank you!
It’s sad it’s a quiet zone now I wish they could still do there horn
Me too, I was sad when they implemented the quiet zone. The only time they sound their horns now is when there is a city event. The dispatchers instruct them to "ring and blow" the entire way through town just in case anyone is walking in the tracks.
Quite a bit has changed since this all was taken. 0:18 822, 1:19 521, 2:25 1104, and 5:37 1101 as of now are all now in Tri-Rail's New Scheme, and 0:37 517 and 5:46 513 are both now sidelined after having been involved in crossing accidents. 1:36 F40PH 807 itself has also changed quite a bit itself. At this time, it had a very awkward-sounding P5 horn, but now it has a K5LA, and is the only Tri-Rail F40 to have had one ever since they were rebuilt.
Wow, that's a lot of change in a matter of 4 and a half years. I appreciate you taking the time to write this. Thanks for the info!
